Music at St. Nicholas

The magnificent space in St Nicholas, the good light and fine acoustic make an ideal venue for concerts. We are keen to encourage the use of the church for music-making by our community and schools, choirs, orchestras, and small groups and soloists from wider afield. We host a wide range of genres. Refreshments are usually provided and the communal area at the back of the church is a great space for mingling during the interval. The church houses a beautiful Foster & Andrew organ, and a Blüthner grand piano was made available on permanent loan some years ago.

Concerts in St. Nicholas Church have been on the annual calendar for many years; for the last ten years we have held free lunchtime concerts every Wednesday in July and August. Performers for these are local musicians, who enjoy sharing their musical talent. These concerts are very varied and have included students from both the High and Primary Schools, the Guildford Holy Trinity Church Choir, local choirs, instrumental chamber groups and soloists, organ and piano recitals. During Wells Carnival Week a local ‘celebrity’ is invited to be the guest for a ‘Desert Island Discs’ presentation. The lunchtime concerts are followed by very popular soup lunches.

We also have afternoon and evening concerts, which, during the last few years, have included a Children’s Choir from the USA, a Folk Duo, concert and a jazz band and large choirs from around the UK.

Our organ is in urgent need of a complete refurbishment and funding for its repair is being sought.
